With its bone crushing, bloodthirsty themes of courage, bravery, heroism, and revenge against  the cruel elements and barbaric foes, one would think that comic book shelves would be stuffed with hordes of Viking-themed comic books and graphic novels, but that’s not exactly the case.

Sure, there was Oni Press’s Helheim and Vertigo’s Northlanders but that seems like ages ago!

Well, I can say with bold enthusiasm that Image Comics is bent on remedying that major oversight this fall with a new Norse-centric supernatural title called Viking Moon which will be must-read material for followers of Gungnir Books and its mission to forge new literary myths.

Written by Joe Pruett (Cable, Domino, Negative Burn) and matched with howlingly good artwork by Marcelo Frusin (Hellblazer, Loveless), Viking Moon blends a haunting historical tale injected with furry werewolf fiends pitted against a fierce clan of nomadic Viking warriors. Paired with beastly variant covers courtesy of Frusin, Philippe Xavier, Dalabor Talajic and Möritat, this dynamic five-issue series explains why Vikings didn’t stay long in North America.

Here's the official description:

VIKINGS versus WEREWOLVES! The real reason the Vikings fled North America! This barbaric adventure begins in 1003, when Leif Erikson established a Viking settlement in Vneland (present day Newfoundland), a strange new world of plenty. But this untamed frontier is populated by more than an indigenous people… This is something unnatural that stalks the night... Twenty years after the original expedition ended in disaster, a new attempt to settle this wilderness is made. Ulf and his hardened tribe of Vikings soon discover that the whisper of creatures who are both human and beast are not primitive legend, but death-bringing reality.

"Viking Moon is a project I’ve spent several years researching and crafting, waiting to find that special someone who could bring it to life with me. To my ultimate pleasure, that someone was Marcelo Frusin!" Pruett told IGN. "Marcelo is one of the most accomplished artists in the industry and one of my personal all-time favorites! Discovering that he had the same passion for our source material (Vikings and Werewolves!) only cemented to me that he was my perfect partner-in-crime for this tale! I think the work he is doing is some of the best of his career. So, if you love Vikings and Werewolves as much as the two of us do, you are in for a treat!”

Viking Moon #1 strikes comic book shops and digital outlets on Wednesday, September 24.
